Summary of This Commentary
In this conclusion of our 2-part series , we continue the discussion of the reforms introduced by Sir Roger and his colleagues — reforms which rescued New Zealand from the brink of economic disaster and set it on the path to long-term, sustainable growth.  You may be wondering why a publication on local government is devoting space to the policies of a senior government.  There are 3 reasons.  The 1st is what we can learn about the importance of choosing the right policies.  (For a stark contrast, compare those policies with what the current U.S. administration is doing.)  The 2nd reason is the underlying fundamentals — including stability, industry, and equity — which were used to come up with the right policies.  These fundamentals apply at all levels of government, including local government.  If you apply these fundamentals in choosing the policies, programs, and practices for your local economy, I expect you will be very pleased with the results — if your senior governments have made the right choices as well.  The 3rd reason is to assist all of us in urging our senior governments — whether as lobbyists or simply as voters — to choose policies which will enable our economies to grow at their full potential instead of just limping along or even contracting.  If your senior governments are serving up an economic dish which is failing to meet expectations, here is a recipe which will exceed them.

As always, we welcome your comments.

About the Cordillera Institute
The Cordillera Institute is an independent research and public policy organization dedicated to excellence in local government.  Since our founding in 1994, we have studied many high-performance organizations to learn what makes them successful.  From this research, we have distilled a set of principles, paradigms, policies, programs, and practices which are the key elements of their success.  Our mission is to be a catalyst — to empower municipalities, school boards, public utilities, and other local public agencies to achieve excellence by adopting and applying these success elements.  For more information, just click on the About CI button below.
